June 18, 2009 Update:
Due to an increase in construction vehicles moving between the campus bowl and the construction zone north of the Place Riel Student Centre, extra fencing has been put up to provide additional safety to people moving near the zone.

As a result of the new fencing, it is no longer possible to move along paths on the western side of the bowl. The walking path closure will remain until the construction crane is taken down (currently projected to be in 2010). Construction Crane Now Fully Operational
Construction on the Place Riel building crane is now complete. The crane, currently the largest in the city, will help to complete the construction of a new four-story building addition located on the north side of the Place Riel Student Centre. The crane tower’s reach will extend from Place Riel to the campus bowl area.

Because the crane will be helping to move heavy equipment and materials, anyone moving near the construction zone should take caution, and to stay away from the zone fencing whenever possible.

June 8, 2009
Place Riel construction crews have completed the assembly of a 200 ft. construction crane. The crane extends from the north side of Place Riel to the project holding area located on the western end of the campus bowl, and is able to lift a maximum of 18 metric tons (39,690 pounds).

The Place Riel construction crew is currently driving piles (steel support columns) for the foundation of the four story building addition. Meanwhile demolition continues behind the hoarding wall inside Place Riel.

June 1, 2009

The following vendors / areas will be affected during the power shut down:

- The Crepe Factory
- Treats
- Games Room
- USSU Student Help Centre
- Extreme Pita
- Campus Computer Store
- USSU Information Centre
- Arts Tunnel Computer terminals (including outlets – tunnel lights and vending machines will remain on).

Emergency power will remain on during the power shut down.

May 26, 2009
Place Riel Construction crews have erected additional fencing along the north side path of the campus bowl, extending towards the east. The fencing was put up as a safety measure to better protect people moving along the north side path. Currently the path is being used by transport trucks to haul construction equipment and materials to the lay-down area located on the western side of the bowl. People moving around the bowl are asked to be aware of transport trucks, and to please avoid any contact with the fencing.

Place Riel crews will be placing a foundation base as part of the process for the installation of a construction crane. Once the base is placed, the rest of the crane foundation will be prepared later in the week, including the installation of rebar and a final concrete pour.

Survey crews will be on site Wednesday, May 26 to make final markings for the placement of piles, which will be part of the foundation for the new four story building addition.

May 21, 2009
The switch of a natural gas line servicing Marquis Hall was successfully completed Wednesday afternoon, May 20th.

May 20, 2009
SaskEnergy officials are now on-site overseeing the switch of a natural gas line supplying Marquis Hall. All natural gas supplies to the building have now been shut off. Due to the shutoff, hot food will not be available in Marquis Hall, the College of Arts & Science building, and the College of Agriculture building. Please check back to renewplaceriel.ca for any updates about this, and other project alerts.

May 15, 2009
Personnel from SaskEnergy will be overseeing a natural gas line supply switch servicing Marquis Hall kitchen facilities on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, and natural gas service to the building will be shut off on that day.

Because of the natural gas disruption, Marquis Hall kitchen facilities will not be able to prepare hot food on May 20th. As a result, hot food will not be available on that day for food services located at Marquis Hall, the College of Arts & Science building, and the College of Agriculture building.

May 11, 2009
Preparation is underway for foundation construction for the new four-story student centre building. In order to prepare the building’s foundation, a natural gas line which currently runs underground on the north side of the Place Riel Student Centre will be re-routed to run on the west side of Marquis Hall. NOTE: These construction activities will occur after normal office hours only (after 5 p.m.).

The line currently supplies natural gas to Marquis Hall kitchen and generator.

Once the new line has been installed, a transfer from the old to the new gas line is scheduled to happen on May 20, 2009. In order to make the gas supply transfer possible, all natural gas supplies will be temporarily shut off on that day. Drilling work to prepare a foundation for the construction crane is schedule to being today (May 11, 2009). The digging activity will be mainly confined to the cordoned area just north of the Place Riel Student Centre.

Noise levels will be higher for surrounding buildings, including the Murray Building and Marquis Hall. In anticipation of construction noise, sound insulation barriers have already been installed in the east facing windows of the Murray Building, and the west facing windows of Marquis Hall.

The drilling is expected to finish sometime this week (May 15, 2009).

Construction Equipment Move-in to Intensify
Outdoor construction activity for the Place Riel Renovation Project will intensify over the next few weeks. This week (May 11-15) more construction equipment will be moved into the campus bowl within the gated area, including a piling rig (driver). By the end of May, other major pieces of equipment will also be moved into the construction zone, including the project construction crane. Concrete trucks will also frequently be moving in and out of the area over the next few weeks.

Safety is the top priority for the project. Anyone commuting in and around the campus bowl should take precautions to avoid construction activity whenever possible. Safety flag persons will be posted to help direct hauling vehicles while equipment is being move into the bowl and construction zone.

April 29, 2009
Work on concrete and asphalt removal in the area directly north of the Place Riel Student Centre is now underway. This work is expected to be completed by no later than Monday, May 4, 2009 (weather permitting). At this time, concrete and asphalt removal equipment is being transported into the campus bowl area. Persons around the area are advised to look out for equipment transport trucks, and to use caution. If possible, persons are requested to please stay away from the trucks, or follow directions provided by safety flag persons in the area.

A Bank of Montreal ATM located near the north wall of Upper Place Riel is scheduled for removal later this week. Bank of Montreal customers are advised to use the new Bank of Montreal ATM which is now located in the southern side of Upper Place Riel.

While these cargo trucks are moving through campus, flag persons will be on site to help escort the vehicles. Anyone (including those using bicycles) moving around campus during the week is advised to exercise caution by staying away from the transport vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists are also advised to comply with any direction provided to them by the flag persons.

For more information about the Renew Place Riel project, please go to the official project website renewplaceriel.ca.

The outside area directly north of the Place Riel Student Centre (between the Murray Building and Marquis Hall) is scheduled for asphalt removal for much of the week of April 27 – May 1, 2009. While this area is gated from non-construction personnel, anyone with respiratory challenges or allergies should be aware that this work will create higher levels of dust near the construction zone.  Persons near the area should also be aware that there will also be significant levels of noise created during this period. Offices windows directly next to the work area have been specially insulated to help reduce the heightened noise effects.

April 13, 2009
